A bill authored by a Madison Lake Republican meant to make college more affordable was heard in the Senate Higher Education Committee Tuesday.

Madison Lake Republican State Senator Rich Draheim.

Senator Rich Draheim’s bill states that online courses cannot cost more than tuition for a comparable on-campus classroom course.

Current students enrolled at Minnesota State college campuses testified during the committee hearing that they are being charged more for their online courses than their on-campus courses.

During his time in the Senate, Draheim says college affordability has been a top priority and in this technological age, there does not seem to be a compelling reason for online courses to cost more than traditional classroom courses and students should not be punished by paying more for their tuition for the increased flexibility online learning provides.
