What a top lawmaker called a “logjam” over taxes and spending is causing Governor Tim Walz and Republicans to put state budget negotiations on hold likely until after Saturday’s Fishing Opener and Mother’s Day on Sunday. Senate Republican Majority Leader Paul Gazelka says he won’t agree to billions of dollars in tax increases plus new spending that Walz and Democrats propose:
“We want them to make movement on the large tax increases across many different areas.”
…including a gas tax increase and the medical provider tax. Governor Walz responds:
“Minnesotans have always known, you get what you pay for and the type of state that you’re looking for.”
The governor says he’s waiting for a “real offer” from Republicans in budget negotiations. Walz says he offered to significantly trim his spending request.
