Amid the debate on police reform bills on the House floor Thursday night, Republican Representative Mary Franson of Alexandria proposed an amendment to ensure no local unit of government could eliminate its police department or law enforcement officers.

“If the police are eliminated, law enforcement is eliminated, you can expect this type of crime to continue to get worse. It will be Gotham City on steroids.”

The amendment was blocked by the Democrat-controlled House. Franson proposed the amendment after the Minneapolis city council recently voted to begin the process of disbanding its police department.
