The Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act, which went into effect Wednesday is facing a lawsuit from the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America. The group claims the law, which allows Minnesotans in urgent need of insulin to access the life-saving drug through their pharmacy, is unconstitutional. Advocate Nicole Smith-Holt says…

“My hope is that at the end of the day, people in need can access the program, people who are at risk of dying are able to get the assistance they need.”

Smith-Holt’s son Alec died in 2017 when he could not afford his insulin. The Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act passed with bipartisan support in both chambers of the Minnesota Legislature.
