State officials are setting up a special task force including citizens, elected officials and others to gather input and make recommendations on statues, monuments and artwork in and around the State Capitol Complex. It’s prompted by the controversy surrounding protesters pulling down the statue of Christopher Columbus, and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan says when the task force makes its recommendations…

“Then a decision will be made with regards to the Columbus statue, but not before. And I anticipate that decision will not be made until, at a minimum, six to eight months from now.”

Earlier this month two Republican state senators, Carla Nelson from Rochester and Bill Ingebrigtsen from Alexandria, asked the Minnesota Historical Society *when* it plans to re-install the Columbus statue — although Nelson acknowledged a reinterpretation of the historical record surrounding Columbus should be included when it’s put back up.
