Courtrooms recently re-opened after being closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Scott Cutcher is the chief public defender for the fifth judicial district. He was asked is it possible to catch up on the current backlog.

“It’s not,” said Cutcher. “Everyone needs to realize this is going to be a long process.”

Cutcher says the court system has used zoom for hearings, but that presents some challenges.

“If there’s live testimony, if you and I start talking at the same time it cuts out,” said Cutcher. “More times than not the court is going to stay they want evidence hearing they want to do it in person and thus that creates some additional hoops to jump through.”

Cutcher says the priorities will always be people in custody and clients that demand a speedy trial.
