State disaster assistance funds could not be used to help local governments recover from civil unrest — the purpose of a bill Republicans are backing in the Minnesota Senate, sparked by last summer’s Twin Cities riots after George Floyd’s death. Hennepin County Emergency Management Director Eric Waage opposes it:
“Oklahoma City, Boston Marathon, the fertilizer plant explosion in west Texas and the Los Angeles riots were all covered under Stafford Acts.”
Alexandria Senator Bill Ingebrigtsen responds the riots were largely preventable:
“Civil unrest that consistently goes on for days is way different than somebody who sets a bomb.”
Republicans have roundly criticized how Governor Tim Walz and local officials responded to the riots in Minneapolis and Saint Paul.
