A bill to legalize recreational marijuana breezed through its first Minnesota House committee Wednesday afternoon, but don’t expect such smooth sailing further along at the legislature. Red Wing Republican Barb Haley warns legalizing another drug will worsen the workforce shortage across Minnesota:

“If they can get folks in to apply, one of the challenges they have is drug addiction: People can’t stay on the job or they don’t pass the drug tests to get the job in the first place.”

Bill sponsor, House Democratic Majority Leader Ryan Winkler responds those are important concerns and he’s happy to talk with business groups — but:

“This is a business opportunity. This is a growth industry that really represents for all parts of the state an opportunity to shift from an illegal, criminal justice approach.”

If the bill passes the Democrat-controlled Minnesota House, it will face stiff opposition in the Republican-controlled Senate.
