House Democrats are urging Senate Republicans to move forward with an “off-ramp” to end Minnesota’s COVID moratorium on evictions in a way that would protect not only landlords but also tenants. Republicans say Democrats have threatened to keep the governor’s emergency powers in place as leverage to secure additional measures during negotiations. D-F-L Representative Michael Howard from Richfield responds:
“Actually it’s quite the opposite: It’s the Senate Republicans that have said, we won’t pass an eviction off-ramp unless we also get other provisions that we want to see passed in housing that are unrelated.”
The eviction moratorium is one of a number of controversial issues in the mix as lawmakers try to wrap-up the state budget before the end-of-June deadline.
