1/7/21 Entertainment Update
— The Golden Globes award show this Sunday is going to be a completely “private event.” The Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced on Thursday, in addition to no audience or media coverage, there will be no live stream. Instead, the winners will be announced on social media and on the association’s website. The award show was booted from NBC last year after the association faced backlash for lack of diversity.
— A new report says Netflix is set to do a documentary on the late Anna Nicole Smith. Variety says it doesn’t have a title and it’s still in production. Smith is a former Playboy model who died at age 39 back in 2007. Her death that happened in Florida was a result of a prescription drug overdose.
— Oscar-nominated director Peter Bogdanovich has died. His daughter said he died of natural causes early Thursday morning. He’s best known for works including “The Last Picture Show.” Bogdanovich was 82-years-old.
— During a recent episode of her ‘Conversations With Olivia Jade’ podcast, Olivia Jade Gianulli addressed a “big misconception” about her involvement in the college admissions bribery scheme that landed both her parents in jail. The former Dancing with the Stars contestant wants everyone to know she worked hard as a high school student. She said she worked very hard in high school and got straight A’s and noted she started her YouTube channel at the age of 14. However she says she’s aware she still has a certain amount of privilege that gives her a leg up.
— James Corden is the latest late-night talk show host to test positive for COVID-19. This comes just days after Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers both announced they tested positive. Corden noted he feels completely fine, which he credits to being fully vaccinated and boosted. The Late Late Show will be off the air for the next couple of days.
— Elmo is releasing a statement after a video of a scene from a 2004 episode of Sesame Street went viral. In the scene, Elmo gets in an argument with Zoe after she insists the last oatmeal cookie should go to her pet rock, Rocco, and not Elmo. In a tweet, Elmo said he and Zoe are still friends and that he has learned to share since then. He noted however he doesn’t want to talk about Rocco yet.
— Saturday Night Live is coming back next week. The late-night comedy sketch show announced West Side Story star Ariana DeBose will host the January 15th episode. She will be joined by Roddy Ricch as a musical guest. The last show before the cast went on a holiday break, was put on with a limited cast. The show also scrapped the musical performance last minute over fears of the omicron coronavirus variant. There’s no word on if the next episode will also have a reduced cast.
— Comic John Mulaney is now single in the eyes of the government. TMZ reports Mulaney signed the final divorce paperwork on Thursday, thus officially ending his marriage to Anna Marie Tendler. This comes about four months after he filed for divorce. The couple had been married since 2014. But, Mulaney has already moved on. He recently welcomed his first child with Olivia Munn in November.
— It’s a big day for one British royal. Kate Middleton — also known as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge — is celebrating her 40th birthday today. She wed Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, in April of 2011 in a lavish ceremony seen around the globe.
