Returning to school can be very stressful for many students, especially those who suffer from anxiety and other mental health issues. Dr. Sara Polley with Hazelden Betty Ford:
“I think a lot of kids can really struggle with transition and so going back to school after summer break is a common time when kids who might be a little bit more of an anxious temperament or have a little bit of a harder time might have increases in difficulty with adjusting.”
If your child is showing signs of anxiety, give them the space and time to express their thoughts. Ask them how they’re feeling, and provide assurance that they have the strength to handle things that are stressful.
