Representative Ilhan Omar is joining fellow members of Congress and Muslim civil rights groups to condemn a rise in attacks against the Muslim community. Omar, who was born in Somalia, says she feels the pain of such attacks on a deeply personal level…

“These incidents pain me because they are so familiar. As a young refugee who barely spoke English, students mocked me, even going as far as putting chewing gum on my hijab. At one point I was physically attacked.”

Omar and others are calling for a special envoy for monitoring and combating Islamophobia at the U-S State Department.
